There is very little distinguishing run 20 from run 30 from run 50, and due to the heavy reliance of skills on RNG I find there aren't that many interesting decisions in combat. And the dungeons are all the same, there are unskippable animations, generally things take more time than they would need to given how much they are repeated. The resources to upgrade things trickle in very slowly - you get very little out of the time spent going through a dungeon. I didn't feel overwhelme, I felt like I had nothing interesting to do. The atmosphere is superb - seriously one of the best I've seen - but the gameplay is so repetitive that once the discovery phase is over and you familiarize yourself with all abilities, it gets boring real fast. Hmm, I didn't enjoy DD, and I tried it multiple times. Rimworld is a similar game that is easier to get into and learn but has a fraction of the content and options. Also tile sets and the ‘lazy Newb pack’ are how to start, it just makes things better. Wiki guides are pretty essential while learning to play. It’s a story generator, like how I had to deal with a were-panther epidemic in my fortress (it was brutal) or the explosive reason why I banned my dwarves from carrying alcohol on them when drafted for battle. It is pretty much unparalleled in what you can do - at one point I created a giant cistern of water pumped from a river that could have a flood gate opened remotely to flood the walled off entrance to my mountain kingdom in case of large scale attacks my troops can’t handle - just drown all the goblins!
